Experienced Legal Help

in the Greater Moncton and Surrounding Areas

At Meredith Bateman Law, you are not passed off to an untrained staff member, to AI chatbots or a call centre. When you work with us, you work directly with experienced lawyers and in-person staff members who know New Brunswick law, know the local courts, and genuinely care about your outcome.

We have been part of this community since 1998. Our office is friendly, relaxed, and judgment-free, because legal matters are stressful enough without your lawyer making you feel out of place.

Harley

Chief Morale Officer (Semi-Retired)

Meredith Bateman

Founder & Principal Lawyer

Family Law · Real Estate · Wills & Estates  · Estate Administration

Harley served as Chief Morale Officer of Meredith Bateman Law for many years, and she did it with distinction. She greeted every client, sensed every anxious mood, and made even the most stressful visits feel a little less daunting. Her contributions to office culture were, by any measure, immeasurable.

These days, Harley has eased into a well-earned semi-retirement. Most days, she now goes to her grandmother’s to hang out, where she gets the attention and service she expects. Things like a personal towel to dry her feet at the door when she comes inside, a “one bite for me, one bite for Harley” standard policy at meal time, special snacks, and the role of supervising various art projects that are undertaken daily by her in-house staff. She still makes occasional appearances at the office, mostly to check that standards are being maintained and to remind everyone who built this place, but the day-to-day grind has been passed on to her successor, Rosie.

Harley has no complaints about this arrangement. Rosie, for her part, has several.

Meredith has been practising law in New Brunswick since 1998, accumulating over 25 years serving families, homeowners, and individuals across Greater Moncton and beyond. Meredith graduated from Caledonia Regional High after attending school in Hillsborough from the age of 5.

Meredith attended St Thomas University in Fredericton, graduating with a double major in History and English with a minor in Psychology, before moving down the hill in Fredericton to attend law school at the University of New Brunswick. She then moved home, law degree in hand, to start her practice in the greater Moncton area.

She founded Meredith Bateman Law in Riverview and has built the firm on a simple belief: legal matters are personal, and clients deserve a lawyer who treats them that way. No intimidation. Real help getting through the complexity. Just clear, experienced advice and help.

What sets Meredith apart:

• Has argued before the New Brunswick Court of Appeal on family and criminal matters

• Former instructor at the NB Law Society bar admission course, teaching Family Law and Child Protection practicing to new lawyers across New Brunswick

• Extensive Child Protection experience, having represented parents, children and with experience acting for the Crown prosecutor’s office.

• Background in Federal Drug and Income Tax Prosecutions as well as child protection prosecutions,   bringing courtroom depth that most family lawyers simply do not have

• Member of the Law Society of New Brunswick and the Canadian Bar Association.

• Grew up in Hillsborough, NB, making her a genuine local who has built her career serving this community for over two decades.

Meredith’s office is in Riverview and serves clients across Moncton, Dieppe, Sussex, Saint John, Miramichi, Sackville, and surrounding areas.

Harley

Meredith Bateman

Chief Morale Officer

Harley has an official position at the office as the Chief Morale Officer. Harley generally works five days a week, and while she can be cranky at the end of a long day, she usually hides it from the clients quite well. Her paygrade is questionable at best, but she does a fine job of greeting everyone as they come into the office, and making sure things go smoothly. Harley can be quite therapeutic for clients who are going through a stressful time in their lives. She can sense their anxiety, put them at ease, and alleviate any discomfort they may experience.

Senior Lawyer

Meredith Bateman grew up in and went to Elementary School and High School in Hillsborough, NB. She graduated from Caledonia Regional High School in Hillsborough before going on to obtain her under graduate degree at Saint Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick. She completed her law degree at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1997, and then was admitted to the Law Society of New Brunswick as a practicing lawyer in 1998.

After articling, and then working as an associate with a Riverview law firm, Meredith worked at a Moncton law firm for a short period of time before starting her own practice which was then Ménard Bateman in 2001. Over 20 years ago, she moved her office back to Riverview, and has remained in Riverview since that time.

David Balzer

Associate Lawyer

Wills & Estates · Family Law · Employment Law

Bringing a writer’s clarity and a scholar’s precision to Wills, Estates, and Family Law

David brings an unusual depth of experience to the practice of law. Before becoming a lawyer, he built a career as a writer, authoring two non-fiction books and a collection of short stories, a background that gives him a rare ability to translate complex legal matters into language clients can clearly understand.

David holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Arts from McGill University. He completed his law degree at the University of British Columbia, finishing as a visiting student at Windsor Law and graduating in the top 10% of his class.

He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2024 and the New Brunswick Bar in 2025, and now practises at the Riverview office in Wills and Estates, Family Law, and Employment Law. David lives in Hillsborough, NB, within the larger community he now serves.

Rosie

Chief Morale Officer (Acting) | Age: 1

Rosie joined Meredith Bateman Law immediately upon arrival at 8 weeks of age, taking on the role of Chief Morale Officer on a full-time basis, entirely ignoring child labour laws, while Harley transitioned into semi-retirement.

She is still learning the ropes, greeting clients, managing office energy, and maintaining the general sense of warmth that the firm is known for. She takes her responsibilities seriously. Perhaps too seriously, given that Harley, who trained her, now works approximately zero days a week while Rosie covers the full schedule.

Rosie is, by all accounts, doing an excellent job, though she would like it noted that she finds Harley’s current lifestyle arrangement deeply unfair, and has formally lodged her objection with management. Management has acknowledged her various concerns and done nothing about them.

Rosie greets every client with curiosity, sniffing of shoes and the occasional dramatic sigh. She is a full-time employee and would like that on the record.
